Being a male Witch in a predominantly female-based religion.
The misconception that people who identify as male can’t be witches is one of the unexpected surprises I’ve encountered on my path. The belief that witchcraft is inherently feminine and that males are not wired to understand or appreciate femininity underpins this common prejudice. This generalization, however, is completely false. There is no single, definitive path to practicing witchcraft. It’s not just women who can be witches; men can be just as potent and effective.
“But I thought a male Witch was called a Warlock?”
— Most Everyone
The word “Warlock” actually has a tainted past that has given rise to its current negative connotations. It is derived from the Old English word “wǣrloga,” which was used to describe those who were deemed traitors or wrongdoers because they broke an oath. In comparison, “Witch” is derived from the word “wicce” referring to a “magician,” and was associated with “wiccian,” meaning “to practice witchcraft.” Many men who practice witchcraft shy away from the historically negative implications of the term “Warlock” in favor of the more positive and empowering identity of “Witch.”
The underrepresentation of those who identify as men in the witchcraft community is another obstacle that men who practice the craft must overcome. Women make up the majority of witchcraft communities online and in print. This can make it hard for male witches to discover information that speaks to their unique experiences. Nonetheless, there are more and more accessible materials for male witches, and the community is opening up to them.
Despite the obstacles, it can be rewarding to delve into witchcraft as a male. Male witches have much to learn from the experiences of their female counterparts and much to offer to the craft. They can also aid in dispelling myths associated with masculinity and witchcraft.
I say, “Go for it!” if you identify as male and are curious about witchcraft. It can be difficult, but it’s worth it in the end. There is no one correct way to practice witchcraft because it is open and different. It’s not just women who can be witches; men can be just as potent and effective. Do not let anything stop you from investigating witchcraft if you are a guy.
